Zambia was an challenging place to live and work. The advertising
industry, like most things in the country, was very unsophisticated.
The
agency though, was the largest and most prestigious, and handled
an impressive account list of international brands keen to develop
markets in the underdeveloped world.
Production
problems were horrendous, but creative
opportunities limited only by one's own abilities and what the market
would accept.
Generally,
advertising had to be very brutal and obvious as the audience had
no understanding of subtleties and often a limited understanding
of English.
Working
in Zambia was good experience with basic sales techniques and coping
with adverse circumstances.
